Abstract in Portuguese
A IL pré-pastejo afetou as variáveis altura pré e IL pós-pastejo.

Abstract in English
The use of nitrogen fertilizer as a means of ensuring productivity and persistency of pastures may cause environmental problems and also represent a high cost to producers. In that context, forage legumes, particularly perennial forage peanut, are interesting alternatives for supplying nitrogen to pastures, but with the limitation of having little information regarding their use and management under grazing conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the regrowth process of forage peanut using an experimental protocol analogous to that normally used tropical forage grasses under rotational grazing. Treatments corresponded to combinations between two pre (95% and maximum canopy light interception during regrowth - LI95% and LIMax) and two post-grazing (post-grazing heights equivalent to 40 and 60% of the pre-grazing height) conditions, and were allocated to experimental units (200 m2 paddocks) according to a 2x2 factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. Targets of LI pre-grazing affected the pre-grazing height and LI post-grazing. The residual sward LAI did not vary with treatments, most likely the reason why there was no difference in grazing interval. Greater rates and total herbage accumulation were recorded for the LIMax target, consequence of the greater accumulation of stolons at the lower strata of the swards. On the other hand, greater percentage of leaflets was recorded for the LI95% target. The growth pattern of regrowth for forage peanut was similar to that of tropical forage grasses, but given its stoloniferous growth habit, stolon accumulation in the lower strata of the sward may not represent a limitation to leaf accumulation and morphological composition of the grazing strata. As a result, the greater pre-grazing sward height associated with the LIMax target may facilitate herbage prehension and intake, a condition that still needs to be evaluated in a specific study.
