Effect of flooding on the stablishment of Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle) Schweickerdt e Setaria anceps Stapf ex Massey cv Kazungula
Abstract in English
The present work was developed at the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", Piracicaba-SP. Its main purpose was to study the survival capacity of Brachiaria humidicola and Setaria anceps cv. Kazungula under flooding conditions in the stablishment period. Experimental data was colected in two phases for each of the species tested. Floading conditions were simulated through ciment boxes full of mud soil at the field. In the first phase to Brachiaria humidicola it was imposed flooding conditions at: 0,10,20,30 and 40 days after sowing and maintained during the period of 10 days. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments and 4 replicates. It was observed a superior tendency to the treatment which inundation stage was 30 days after sowing, although the t test did not show any statistical difference (p<0.01) between number of emerged plants at the end of this phase compared with the control. In, the second phase to Brachiaria humidicola, flooding periods were of: 15, 20, 30 e 35 days, after 30 days sowing. The results show that, plants of Brachiaria humidicolacan express maximum potential when are not under flooding conditions however Brachiaria humidicola individuals with 30 days growth age are able to survive under flooding situations up to 35 days, differing statistically from control (p<0.05) in medium height of plants. To Setaria anceps in the first phase it was imposed the following flooding conditions: 0,10, 20, 30 and 40 days after sowing with duration of 10 days flooding. The experimental design was the same used previously with Brachiaria humidicola. Treatments did not differed statistically (p<0.01) in terms of number of individuals saved at the end of this phase, except for the treatment in which flooding condition was imposed at 10 days after sowing. It was observed a superior tendency to the treatment in which the flooding condition was imposed immediately after sowing (0 days), sugesting a possible inducement of flooding to seed germination to this specie. The second phase to Setaria anceps had flooding periods of: 15, 25, 30 e 35 days immediately after sowing. The results show that 15 or more days of flooding conditions can affect the seed germination potencial, reducing the number of emerged plants (p<0.05) compromising the stablishment of plants.
