Agricultural characteristics, chemical composition, quality and use of two varieties of silage and three hybrids of forage sorghum
Abstract in English
This research was carried out in the Department of Zootechny of Escola Superior de Agricultua "Luiz de Queiroz" to evaluate the agricultural characteristics, chemical composition, quality and voluntary intake of two forage sorghum silages and three silages made with hybrids of medium and low size plants. The varieties and hybrids studied were IPA-SF-25, IPA-467-4-2, AG-2004-E, ICI-CS-SILO-03 and ICI-CS-SILO. Statistical analysis of the chemical composition and quality of the forage were made using a totaly random and for the voluntary intake of silage trial was used a 5 x 5 latin square. The voluntary intake of silage was evaluated using 5 sheep in metal cages during 70 days divided in 5 periods of 14 days. Sorghums were harvested 129 days after planting. After harvesting, yields of dry matter were determined in an air forced oven at 65°C. It was observed that DM values for the hybrids were higher than for the forage varieties and values were 28,2; 23,4; 30,7; 31; 7 and 33,7 to IPA-467-4-2, AG-2004-E, ICI-CS-SILO-03 and ICI-CS-SILO, respectively. The results showed that the higher percentage of crude protein was verified in ICI-CS-SILO-03 hybrid which presented an average of 9,8% statistically (P < 0,01) higher than all other hybrids and varieties studied. In general, the silages of forage varieties showed significant differences for FDN, FDA, cellulose (CEL) and lignin (LIG). The IPA-467-4-2 variety and ICI-CS-SILO hybrid showed higher hemicellulose percentages. The average pH of silages was 3,2 while the ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3) ranged from 11,4 to 15,9% of the total nitrogen of the silage, values of silages of average and good quality. The voluntary intake of dry matter was different (P< 0,01) for the silages. Values observed were: 44,9; 49,5; 72,5; 83,4 and 50,1 g/kg of metabolic weight for the forage sorghum varieties IPA-SF-25 and IPA-467-4-2 and for AG-2004-E, ICI-CS-SILO-03 and ICI-CS-SILO varieties, respectively. The grain producing hybrids can be considerate a better forage for silage nelsing.
