O experimento foi realizado no período de outubro a dezembro de 1997, nas dependências do Departamento de Zooctenia, ESALQ/USP. Foram utilizadas 4 vacas holandesas, não lactantes, com cânulas no rúmen em um delineamento experimental quadrado latino 4 x 4. As dietas experimentais eram constituídas por cana-de-açúcar com volumoso exclusivo, farelo de soja como suplemento protéico no tratamento A e níveis crescentes de uréia (1,0; 1,5 e 2,0% na matéria fresca da cana) nos tratamentos B, C e D respectivamente. O farelo de soja foi oferecido para tornar as dietas A e B isonitrogenadas. O consumo de MS foi maior (P<0,05) para o tratamento A (7,76; 4,94; 4,53; 4,02 kg . dia-1). O consumo de PB foi superior (P<0,05) para o tratamento A (0,869 kg) comparando ao B (0,549 kg). O volume ruminal de líquidos foi superior (P<0,05) para o tratamento A (35,06 litros) comparado ao C (28,54 litros) e D (26,20 litros); e para o tratamento B (31,55 litros) comparado ao D. O “turnover” (2,0) e a taxa de diluição (8,31%.h-1) não foram influenciadas (P>0,05) pelo tratamento. A digestibilidade da MS foi significantemente maior (P<0,05) para os tratamentos A (69,91%) e C (69,37%) comparadas com os tratamentos B (65,10%) e D (65,37%)

The effects of urea levels on dry matter intake, rumen volume and passage rate in sugar cane based diets

The trial was conducted from October through December of 1997 at the Departamento de Zootecnia, ESALQ/USP. Four rumen cannulated dry Holstein cows were used in a 4 x 4 Latin Square design; the experimental diets constisted of sugar cane as the exclusive roughage and soybean meal as the protein supplement in treatment A and urea at levels of 1, 1.5 and 2% of fresh sugar cane in treatments B, C, and D, respectively. Soybean meal was fed to make treatments A and B isonitrogenous. All diets with the mineral mix top dressed were offered ad Iibitum twice daily. Dry matter intake was significantly higher (P<0.05) for treatment A (7.76, 4.94,5.53,4.02, respectively for treatments A, B, C, and D). Rumen volume (1) for treatment A (35.1) was significantly higher than for treatments C and D (28.5 and 26.2, respectively) and for treatment B (31,5) than for treatment D. The average dilution rate was 8.31 %.h-1 and it was not significantly affected by the diets. The dry matter digestibility (%) in treatments A (69.9) and C (69.4) was significantly higher than in treatments B (65.1) and D (65.4)
