Virginiamycin as a growth stimulant of weanling pigs
Abstract in English
The purpose of this research was to determine the adequate dietary level of virginiamycin as a growth stimulant for weanling pigs. Seventy piglets with 10,38 kg average initial weight were utilized to test the following levels: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm. A randomized complete block design, with 6 replications and 2 or 3 pigs/experimental unit (pen), was uti1ized. The basal diet was composed of corn, soybean meal, sucrose, and mineral and vitamin supplements. The experimental diets and water were provided "ad libitum" during the 28 day experimental period. The pigs were weighed individually and the feed intake/pen was registered every week. There was a tendency to a quadratic effect (P < .20) of virginiamycin on average daily gain (ADG; .469, .495, .523, .516 and .508 kg). Also, a tendency to a quadratic effect (P < .10) on daily feed intake (DFI; .90, .97, .98, .94 and .94 k g) was observed. On the other hand, feed conversion (FC; 1.92, 1.96, 1.88, 1.83 and 1.85) was linear (P < .01) improved by added virginiamycin. All these effects could be described by the following equations: ADG = .4676520 + .0015645x - .0000116x2, R2 = .96; DFI = .904048 + .002676x - .000025x2, R2 = .77 and FC = 1.93933 - .00104x, R2 =.59. Hematocrit (Ht; 31.5, 32.8, 32.3, 32.3 and 30.4%), hemoglobin (Hb; 9.92, 10.38, 10.17, 10.10 and 9.50 g/dl), and plasma albumin (Alb; 2.82, 2.92, 3.00, 2.83 and 8.90 g/dl), urea (Ur; 23.5, 22.8, 23.7, 22.7 and 24.7 mg/dl) and triglycerides (Tri; 50.3, 53.3, 40.7, 48.8 and 44.6 mg/dl ) were not affected (P > .05) by the virginiamycin levels of the diet. However, this antibiotic determined quadratic responses (P < .03) of plasma globulin (Glo; 2.98, 2.80, 2.62, 2.95 and 3.08 g/dl) and albumin/globulin ratio (Alb/Glo; .99, 1.07, .97 and .96. Also a tendency to a quadratic response (P < .09) of plasma total protein level (Pt; 5.57, 5.72, 5.62, 5.78 and 5.98 g/dl) was observed. These responses could be described by the following equations: Glo = 2.9219050 - .0096857x +. 0001168x2, R2 = .79; Alb/Glo = .994048 + .004896x - .00055x2, R2 = .51 Pt = 5.75333 - .00573x + .00008x2, R2 = .98. The mathematical equations of ADG and DFI allowed to determine 60 ppm of virginiamycin as the best dietary level for weanling pigs, even though the FC was linearly improved up to 100 ppm. On the other hand, plasma total protein, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio showed that the dietary virginiamycin level could be lower (40 ppm). Therefore, the results of this experiment showed that virginiamycin can be an efficient growth promoter for weanling pigs.
