Nutrients digestibility of diets with increasing levels of palm kernel meal (Elaeis guineenses Jacq.) for horses
Abstract in English
This study was conducted at the Departamento de Zootecnia da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ) da Universidade de São Paulo. The experiment objective was to determinate nutrients digestibility of diets with increasing levels of palm kernel meal in horses. Four castrated horses, ageing 60 month old were used in a Latin square (4 x 4) experimental design. It was tested four experimental diets T1, T2, T3 and T4 which had respectively 0, 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0% of palm kernel meal in the basal diet. The daily diet was divided in two meals, offered at 7:00 and 12:00 AM on a basis of 1.4% of the live weight of dry matter, plus grass hay (Cynodon dactylon Jacq.) offered at 1:00 and 6:00 PM on basis of 1.0% of the live weight of dry matter. Water were available "ad libitum". Total collection of feces was made for determination of the apparent digestibility coefficients of the diets. The results were: dry matter 53.32%; 53.29%, 54.21% and 55.93%; crude protein 60.60%, 60.55%, 62.98% and 65.95%; crude fiber 33.32%, 31.36%, 31.56% and 32.99%; ether extract 17.04%, 26.49%, 20.22% and 27.24% and nitrogen free extract 63.13%, 63.11%, 64.22% and 66.22% respectively for T1, T2, T3 e T4. The results showed that there were no statistical differences (P > 0,05) among treatments for the dry matter, crude fiber, ether extract and nitrogen free extract apparent digestibility coefficients. It was found statistical difference (P < 0,05) among treatments for the crude protein apparent digestibility coefficient. Based on the data collected it can be concluded that the palm kernel meal can be used in horse feeding programs at the levels tested in this experiment.
