Reproductive management of broad-nosed caiman, Caiman latirostris (Daudin, 1802), in captivity
Abstract in English
We divided broad-nosed caiman reproductive management into four steps: group assembly, nesting behavior, egg incubation, and hatchling management. We considered aggressive behavior as the main limit factor to the breeding group formation. We reported agonistic interactions from August 1987 to December 1991 and analyzed them under the following characteristics: frequency during the year, influence on mortality rate; influence by group size and animal density; and sex, size, weight, precedence and number of involved animals. We studied nesting behavior from 1986 to 1992. We reported and analyzed the following features: nest size and composing materials; distance between nest and water pond; egg laying, incubation and hatching periods; clutch size; egg, hatchling and parents biometry, and frequency of maternal behavior. We tested the following methods of incubation: a) Natural: Eggs were kept into the nest during the whole incubation period; b) Partly artificial: Eggs were collected and artificially incubated from the 60th incubation day on; and c) Artificial: Eggs were collected and artificially incubated since the first days of incubation. We considered initial feeding management as an essential factor to hatchling successful maintenance in captivity under the following aspects: feeding behavior frequency during daytime, food preferences, and food placement and live prey influences on hatchling feeding behavior
