No presente trabalho foram avaliadas as características de crescimento: altura da cernelha (A), peso (P) e perímetro torácico (Pt) de cavalos Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH), nascidos entre 1980 e 1985, no haras Pioneiro, situado em Brasília (DF) . Foram estudadas as influências do ano de nascimento, sexo, estação de nascimento, idade e altura da mãe sobre as características examinadas ao nascer (AN, PN e PtN ), 6 ( A6. P6 e Pt6) e 12 meses de idade (A12, P12 e Pt12), utilizando dados de 140 animais. Além disso, foram utilizados dados de 86 animais, do nascimento aos 36 meses, para avaliar a taxa de crescimento e analisar 5 modelos de crescimento no ajuste desses dados. O ano de nascimento teve efeito (P < 0,05) sobre a maioria das características de crescimento, com exceção do Pt6. As características estudadas ate 12 meses de idade, não sofreram variações (p > 0,05) entre sexo e estação de nascimento. A idade da mãe afetou de forma linear (P < 0,05) a A6 e P6 e de forma quadrática (P < 0,05) o PN, não influenciando as demais características. A altura da mãe apresentou efeito quadrático (P < 0,05) sobre AN e efeito linear (p < 0,01) sobre A6, A12 e PN. Os potros deste estudo atingiram cerca de 82, 89 e 93,5% da sua altura adulta; 46,66 e 81% do seu peso adulto; 73,5, 83 e 89% do seu perímetro torácico adulto aos 6, 12 e 18 meses de idade, respectivamente. A função (Y = aX^b) foi a que melhor se ajustou aos dados das características de crescimento examinadas neste estudo. A estimativa do parâmetro (ver dissertação) foi usada para comparar a taxa de crescimento. A análise de variância pelo método dos quadrados mínimos mostrou que o ano de nascimento exerceu efeito significativo sobre o parâmetro (ver dissertação) de todas as variáveis estudadas. O sexo afetou (P < 0,05) somente o parâmetro (ver dissertação) de altura. A estação de nascimento, idade e altura da mãe não influenciaram o parâmetro (ver dissertação) das três características estudadas. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que as medidas de altura, peso e perímetro torácico verificadas na idade de 6 meses são altamente correlacionadas com idades posteriores

Height at withers (H), weight (W) and chest girth (Cg) data on Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) horses orn from 1980 to 1985 in Brasilia, Brazil, were studied. The effects of year of birth, sex, season of birth, age and height of dam were studied on characteristics examined at birth (HB, WB and CgB), 6 (H6, W6 and Cg6) and 12 months of age (H12, W12 and Cg12). Data for 140 foals were utilized. Besides, avarege measurements for 86 animals at birth and at monthly intervals to 36 months are given and the growth rate was established. Five models were evaluated to describe the growth measurements of horses. The year of birth showed significant effect (p < 0,05) on most of the traits studied, but no significant influence (p > 0,05) on Cg6. The characteristics studied at 12 months of age showed no significant variation (P > 0,05) according to the sex and season of year. The age of dam had a quadratic effect (P < 0,05) on WN and a linear effect (p < 0,05) on H6 and W6. The height of dam had a quadratic effect (P < 0,01) on H6, H12 and WN. The foals in this study attained about 82, 89 and 93,5% of their mature height; 46, 66 and 81% of their mature weight and 73,5, 83 and 89% of their mature chest girth at 6, 12 and 18 months, respectively. The function (y = aX^b) was the best model to describe the growth characteristics of horses. The parameter (see dissertation) of the model were used to compare growth rate. Least-squares analyses of variance showed the year of birth had a significant (P < 0,01) effect on parameter (see dissertation) in all variables studied. The sex affect significaticantly only the parameter (see dissertation) for height. The season of birth, age and height of dam did not affect any of the three traits. The results showed that the responses correlated in subsequent ages were very high when selecting for measurement growth at 6 months of age
