Effect of feeding programs using supplemental colostrum on calves with different levels of serum passive immunity
Abstract in English
The immunological status and performance of thirty-two Holstein newborn calves under different milk feeding programs were evaluated. The experimental period comprised the first sixty days of life and the following parameters were analysed: total serum protein, serum albumin, serum immunoglobulin, body weight and qualitative data about diarrhea characteristics. The statistical analysis was carried out according to the factorial overline with split-splot statistical model, considering two groups (high and low passive immunity) and two conditions in relation to colostrum in the diet (with and without colostrum). The interaction group versus colostrum was called a treatment, therefore the experimental consisted of four treatments described as follows: T1 = high/without: animals with high levels of passive immunity fed only milk during the first thirty days of life; T2 = low/without: animals with low levels of passive immunity fed only milk during the first thirty days of life; T3 = high/with: animals with high levels of immunological were daily fed 30% of the liquid diet as pooled colostrum, in two meals, from three to thirty days of life, and only milk up to weaning; T4 = low/with: animals with low levels of immunoglobulins were daily fed 30% of liquid diet as pooled colostrum, in two meals, from three to thirty days of life, and only milk up to weaning. Each calf received its own mother's colostrum immediately after birth (2 liters). During the first 30 days of age, classification parameters of feces were daily recorded. Blood samples were collected at 3, 5, 10, 15, 17, 20, 22, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days of age. Specific gravity was determined for each colostrum pool using a hydrometer in order to estimate immunoglobulin concentration. Blood parameters were assayed by the following methods: biuret, electrophoreses and radial immunodifusion. Conclusions: - The feeding of colostrum for extended period did not affect the transition from passive immunity to active immunity in the calves; - The initial concentration of serum 19 did affect the pattern of immuniglobulin fluctuation in the calves; - The feeding of colostrum for extended period resulted in better weight gain componed to animals that have only milk in the diet.
