Nests management of the giant Amazon River turtle - Podocnemis expansa
Abstract in English
The term 'repiquete' is defined as being the sudden and fast elevation of a river water leveI. This natural phenomenon provokes the inundation of some nesting beaches of the giant Amazon river turtle Podocnemis expansa, which are commonly known, in Brazil, as 'Tartaruga-da-Amazônia'. This inundation causes total or partial loss of eggs from many freshwater turtles that live in the Amazon River basin. Besides this problem, the Amazon River turtle has experienced a great destruction of its wild populations, caused by the human use of its meat and other products (e.g.: grease, eggs and skull). The main goal of the present study was to develop a new management system for the Amazon River turtle eggs from the effects of 'repiquetes', in order to decrease natural mortality. This way, it might be possible to furnish hatchlings to commercial ranches. For this purpose, the following three experiments were carried out: 1) Assessment of nest temperature and humidity, and sand density of the egg chamber; 2) Determination of incubation period, eclosion rate, and sex ratio in both natural and artificial conditions; and, 3) Determination of the best period for eggs translocation. Field studies were carried out from August to November 2000. Clutches from Araguaia and Crixás-Açu river sand beaches in the State of Goiás, Central Brazil, have been sampled. The present results suggest that at the beginning of the incubation period nests keep humidity higher than on the sand around and the egg chamber usually presents the same apparent density than the sand around, but it can vary among different beaches even within a single river. The distribution of sand grains can vary among beaches. However, sand grain distribution does not seem to affect embryos survival neither the incubation period. Nest form does not seem to affect the Amazon River turtles reproductive success, but it seems to be related with female body size. The natural nests presents tend to produce female-male-female (FMF) TSD pattern, but artificial incubators tend to produce male-female (MF) TSD pattern. Eclosion rate in artificial incubators can be higher than in natural nests and late eggs translocation result in less embryo mortality
