Chemical and microbial additives in sugar cane silages: conservation losses, aerobic stability and the animals performance
Resumé en anglais
The goal of this trial was to evaluate chemical and microbial additives on sugar cane ensilage and study their effects on the chemical composition, the dry matter losses, aerobic stability and animal performance. On the experiment 1 the cut forage was ensiled in 20 l plastic buckets provided with a "Bunsen valve" for gases release and a device for effluent collection. The treatments (wet basis): control; 1.0% urea; 1.5% urea; 2.0% urea and Lactobacillus buchneri (5 x 104 ufc/g fresh forage) were evaluated 90 days after ensilage. There was treatment effect (P<0.05) for the dry matter recovery, where the control and urea 1.5% treatments were similar, achieving 77.26 and 82.42%, respectively. The three treatments containing urea did not differ and showed similarity with the LB silage. There was no effect for effluent yield, with small production in all treatments. There was treatment effect (P<0.05) for gases losses, where the control treatment had the highest production (22.19% DM), resulting in the lowest dry matter recovery (77.26%). There was no treatment effect for aerobic stability. On the chemical composition of the silages, the urea 2.0% treatment was the best, remaining stable during the aerobic exposition. On the experiment 2 the treatments were: Lactobacillus buchneri; 1.0% urea; 1.5% urea and 2.0% urea. On the chemical composition of the silages, there was treatment effect (P<0.01) for the CP, where the lowest value was observed for LB treatment and the highest value was detected for 1.5 and 2.0% urea treatments. There was a decrease in the levels of the SC and digestibility after the ensilage and there was an increase in the NDF levels after the ensilage. The performance was evaluated in 60 heifers, with mean BW of 240 kg. According to the DMI, there was effect (P<0.05) among treatments only for the third period, where the urea 1.5% treatment had the lowest DMI. Concerning the ADG, there were effect (P<0.05) of urea 1.0% treatment across the periods; on the second period the ADG was lower. There was effect of feed conversion (DMI/ADG) on the urea 1.5% treatment among the sub periods of evaluation. The best result of FC was for urea 1.0% treatment. There was effect (P<0.01) between the treatments for the deterioration losses of the silage, the LB and urea 1.0% had lower losses, demonstrating the efficiency of Lactobacillus buchneri on increasing the aerobic stability of the silage. The 1.0% urea treatment on the sugar cane silage showed advantages related to both, the forage conservation and animal performance
