Title in English
The initial growth and bowing legs in common Rhea (Rhea americana), in captivity fed three levels of ration energy
Abstract in English
Sixty-one Greater Rhea (Rhea Americana) eggs were incubated in an artificial incubator and submitted to temperature of 37.6 oC and relative humidity of 66%. These eggs presented a fertility rate of 50.88%, hatchability was 6.6%, both considered to be low rates. Biometric parameters relating to 91 eggs (22 from ESAM - Mossoró and 8 from the Piracicaba Municipal Zoo) were obtained, as follows: weight, 588.9 g; length, 128.5 mm, width, 88,7 mm; shell thickness, o.87 mm, and length/width ratio, 1.45 (average). The eggs from ESAM presented greater shell thickness than the others. In the nutrition experiment, 26 young chicks originated from 2 locations ? 12 from Parque Zoológico 'Quinzinho de Barros' (brood 01) and 14 from Parque Ecológico de São Carlos (brood 02) were used. The animals were housed in pairs and submitted to 3 levels of energy (2,000, 2,400 and 2,800 kcal EM/kg ration). Ration consumption were measured daily and weight were twice a week. Biometric data inherent to growth, such as, neck, body, tibiotarsal and tarsometatarsal length, in centimeters, were registered weekly up to the 60th day of age. Regression analyses conducted for such parameters did not show differences for the different treatments, however, when the two origins are considered, it was shown that the animals from Sorocaba presented better development. However, 2 birds had leg abnormalities one of them consumed ration with 2,400 and other, with 2,800 kcal EM/kg ration. Two of the animals from Sao Carlos presented fractures, and both had received treatment 3, (2,800 kcal EM/kg ration). Thus, it was concluded that the energy level is directly related to leg abnormality problems, but other factors should also be considered, as general management, and protein levels of the ration.
