Mineral nutrition and digestibility coefficient in vivo in the dry matter of Andropogon gayanus Var. bisquamulatus (Hochst) Hack
Abstract in English
Gamba grass (Andropogon gayanus var. bisquamulatus (Hochst) Hack) being a promising species for Brazilian cattle raising, work was carried out to determine: 1) weight of dry matter, concentration and accumulation of macro and micronutrients from 20 days after germination up to140 days at the flowering stage; 2) determine critical level of phosphorous; 3) determine coefficient of digestibility of the dry matter in relation to the age of the grass. For this purpose an area comprising half a hectare of Terra Roxa Estruturada at Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, (Latitude 20°4131S, Longitude 47°3801WG, elevation 540m.) suitably fertilized, was planted. At intervals of 20 days after germination upto 140 days plants were collected and subdivided into leaves and stem. The dry matter at 80°C was analysed for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. The maximum production of dry matter was checked at 80 days represented by 13.82 g/plant corresponding to 50,000 kg per hectare. At the age of 80 days the following quantities of nutrients were extracted from the grass: 156.85 mg of N; 16.23 mg of P; 278.70 mg of K; 38.45 mg of Ca; 22,92 mg of Mg; 7.76 mg of S; 0.15 mg of B; 0,05 mg of Cu; 3.74 mg of Fe; 1 .15 mg of Mn and 0.29 mg of Zn. It was found that the concentration of P, K and Mn diminished in the leaves as the age of the plant advanced; the concentration of N, Ca, Mg, S and B in the leaves not being affected.ln the stem there was a decrease in N, P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Cu and Fe as the age of the plant increased, the concentration of S, Mn and Zn not being affected. In the green house direct seeding was done in pots containing finely ground quartz as substrate, By percolation the plants received a nutrient solution lacking in phosphorous, in which the following levels of phosphorous were added in mg/1: 0.0017, 0.007; 0.030; 0.120; 0.480; 1.940; 7.750 and 31.80. The critical level of phosphorous corresponds to the maximum production of dry matter at 75 days was 0.022% and the external level was of 0,480 mg of P/1. On completion of the two tests, ít was proceeded to determine the in vivo digestibility coefficient, by the use of the nylon bag technique of the samples of dry matter taken from the various age groups in the pasture.
