Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schum), variety Napier, was used to study the effects of maturity on the production of dry matter and its nutritive value between 40 and 160 days of its vegetative growth. Sampling was done regularly every 30 days. Digestibility in vitro was carried out using zebu (Bos indicus) and taurine (Bos taurus) as the sources of inoculo. The coefficients of digestibility in vitro obtained with the two were compared. Also compared were the methods of the formic acid insoluble fibre and the acid detergent fibre. The field experiment was carried out in the Department of Animal Science of College of Agriculture Luiz de Queiroz between 11/10/76 and 19/03/77 in loam soil (terra roxa) classified as series Luiz de Queiroz. The elephant grass field of the Department of Animal Science was used for the purpose of this experiment. Trimming was done to obtain equal heights of the plants and plots of 1m2 were marked. The experimental design adapted for this work was of random blocks with four repetitions and five treatments. Production of dry matter was estimated by collecting and weighing the material produced in an area of 1m2. Samples were then taken to the laboratory to be prepared for the analysis. The chemical analysis methods of A.O.A.C. as described by the Centre of Tropical Agriculture, University of Floride (1970) were used. Digestibility in vitro of dry matter was determined according to the method described by the above Centre, and the cell wall by the method of GOERING and VAN SOEST (1970) of treating the residue with a solutiou of neutral detergent. Cell wall components were also determined by the above method. Production of dry matter increased significantly with maturity from 5.75 to 34.43 tonnes per hactare. Gross protein contents, ethyl extract, gross ash and cellular contents decreased significantly falling from 8.12, 3.08, 16.09 and 36.87% in the first cutting to 3.56, 1.84, 10.32 and 27.97% in the final cutting. Fibrous fractions increased significantly: 28.46 to 34.63% for gross fibre; 63.13 to 72.03% for neutral detergent fibre; 35.64 to 39.31% for cellulose; 40.23 to 47.87% for the acid detergent fibre; 38.43 to 44.78% for the formic acid insoluble fibre in the first and final cuttings, respectively. The nutritive value of elephant grass fell with plant maturity as shown by the digestibility coefficients which decreased significantly too. The two inoculo differed significantly in their digestion of dry matter and the cell wall, the zebu, however, was more efficient digestively when a plant had a bigger fibre fraction. The formic acid insoluble fibre method did not differ statistically from that of acid detergent fibre.
