Effect of quantity of energetical reserve of seed pieces and soil compaction on the initial growth parameters of sugarcane (Saccharum spp)
Abstract in English
This paper concerns the study of the influence of five levels of energetical reserve of one-bud sugarcane seed pieces and three levels of soil compaction on the initial development of the plants. For this, a randomized block experiment was conducted at the Sugarcane Experimental Station at Araras, SP, IAA/PLANALSUCAR. The sugarcane plants (variety NA56'-79) were grown in fine earth (less than 2mm) taken from the Ap horizon of a Eutrorthox contained in 150 liters amianthus-cement boxes. The earth was artificially compacted prior to planting. Days to sprouting was quantified as number of days for the primary shoot to emerge, while the development of the plants was quantified by the initial following determinations: dry weight of the above ground parts of the plant, roots and·seed pieces, number of tillers affiliations longest root and other growth measurements. From the analysis and interpretation of the data it was found that the sugarcane days to sprouting is influenced by the quantity of energetical reserve in the one-bud seed pieces. The initial development of the plants showed a positive response to energetical reserve levels of the one-bud seed pieces. The effect of soil compaction was evident only for root length. Days to sprouting correlated with seed pieces characteristics prior to planting (weight, length and volume) and also with the parameters which quantify the initial development of the plants.
