Title in English
Accumulation of nutrients by comfrey (Symphytum sp) under greenhouse conditions
Abstract in English
Under greenhouse conditions the effects of growth stages and cutting frequencies of leaf area, fresh and dry weight, and mineral composition of comfrey (Symphytum sp) was studied. Plants were grown in pots containing soil from the Dusky Red Latosol group liberally fertilized with stable manure and mineral fertilizers (macro and micronutrients). A completely randomized design with 12 treatments (number of cuttings) and 3 replicates was used. The experimental data were treated by variance and regression analysis. Plants which were allowed to grow freely showed the peak of the growth parameters when 2 month old. Accumulation of both macro and micronutrients and total dry weight increased gradually as the plants grew old during the 12 month experimental period. The large regrowth capacity of confrey was demonstrated by the fact that when subject to successive cuttings, reached the highest values for fresh weight and leaf when receiving 11 and 12 cuttings per year. Total dry weight and accumulation of P, K, Ca, Mg, ln and B as a function of cutting frequency did not significantly differ. N content built up in proportion to the number of cuttings; meanwhile Fe and Mn tended to show lesser accumulation from 10 cuttings onward, and S with 4 cuttings per year. Plants under monthly regime of cutting absorbed more N and less Fe and Mn than those under free growth. In the case of plants allowed to grow continuously the quantities of elements taken up obeyed the following decreasing order: macronutrients: K, Ca, P ≅: N, Mg and S; micronutrients: Fe, Mn, Zn ≅ B, Cu. In the case of plants subject to monthly cuttings the following decreasing order was observed: macronutrients: K, N, Ca, P, Mg and S; micronutrients: Fe, Zn ≅ B ≅ Mn, Cu.
