Effects of different phosphorus levels and fungal root infection on the growth and nutrient absorption of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis, Muell. Arg.)
Abstract in English
A greenhouse experiment was carried out on the Campus of the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" to determine the effects of VA mycorrhizae and diferent phosphorus levels on the growth of (Hevea brasiliensis seedlings. The experiment was completely randomized in a 3 x 2 factorial desing with 6 replications. The treatments were three levels of phosphorus 0,9; 1,8; and 2,7 g P2O5 tree, having a triple superphosphate as source, and two treatments of inoculation: non-inoculated and inoculated with Gigaspora margarita, both on non-sterilized soil. The analysed parameters were root infection, tree height and diameter, shoot dry weight, concentration and total absorption of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Fe, Mn and Zn in the shoots. The plants were harvested at 9 months. Increasing phosphorus levels favored root infection and increased plant growth in terms of height, diameter, dry weight and foliar contents of P, S and B, while decreasing the foliar content of K and there was no influence on foliar content of N, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and Zn. Higher P levels also increased the total absorption of N, P, Ca, Mg, S, B, Fe and did not influence the absorption of K, Mn and Zn by the plants. The root analysis did not show the presence of the inoculated MVA fungus Gigaspora margarita, however, there was evidence of infection caused by Rhizoctonia sp which was correlated with greater plant growth at the highest P level. There was no influence of inoculation on foliar content of P, K, Mg, S, Fe, Mn and Zn but increases of foliar content of Ca and B and decreases in the foliar content of N at the 2,7 g P2O5/tree level were determined. Total absorption of P, Ca, Mg and B showed increases while there was no effect on total absorption of N, K, S, Fe, Mn and Zn the plants. The boron supply in the soil, at the concentration of 1 p.p.m., induced toxicity conditions and inhibited plant growth.
