Title in English
Determining water stress in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with a Scheduler index system at different irrigation depths
Abstract in English
The purpose of this experiment was the assessment of water stress indexes (crop water stress index, CWSI) for a bean crop, under different irrigation depths using a portable scheduler device. The instrument was provided with sensors that allowed instantaneous measurements of canopy temperature, air temperature, relative air humidity and solar radiation. Fifteen daily determination were carried out in four treatments, at 10, 12, and 14 hr., from august 28 till october 10, 1988. The experiment had a statistical arrangment in randomized blocks with two replications. Treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4 received respectively 337,1; 329,7; 272,1 and 219,1 mm of water from a "line source" sprinkler system, when the accumulated evapotranspiration reached 21 mm measured with a class A pan evaporimeter. At flowering and husk stages, the canopy temperature was 27,8; 29,1; 31,0 and 33,1 centigrade degrees respectively for treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4. For the same treatments (CWSI)1 and (CWSI)2 indexes showed a high correlation between canopy-air temperature difference (Tc-Ta), vapor pressure deficit (DPV) and net radiation (Rn). (CWSI)3 index calculated by energy budget, was more accurated in measuring because it considers further information like aerodynamics resistance (ra) and canopy resistance to the vapor diffusion (rs). At flowering and husk stages, the canopy temperature was 27,8; 29,1; 31,0 and 33,1 centigrade degrees respectively for treatments 1,2,3 and 4. For the same treatments (CWSI)1 and (CWSI)2 indexes, measured at noon, were -0,1; 0,0; 0,5 and 0,9 and respectively and the correspondent grain yields 2645; 2782; 2143 and 1632 kg/ha. (CWSI)3 index, measured at noon, indicated an average evapotranspiration deficits of 0; 4; 25 and 39 respectively with the same grain yields as above. The major difficulty in the estimation of those water stress indexes occurred during days with variable wheather conditions due to instantaneous readings of the scheduler.
