Title in English
Crop rotation and no-tillage systems on a latossolo roxo (oxisol): effects on physical and chemical properties
Abstract in English
A five-year experiment was established in 1985 in the region of Palmital, State of São Paulo, Brazil, with the objective of evaluating the physical and chemical modifications on the Latossolo Roxo (Oxisol) cultivated with soybean under rotation systems with corn, winter leguminous and gramineous plants. The experiment was conducted in an area of 4.400 m2, using a random block allocation design, with eight treatments and three replications. The initial physical and chemical characterization was determined just before the experiment set up. After five years, the soil bulk density, total porosity, macro and microporosity, water retention, available water, aggregate stability, hydraulic conductivity, as well as nutrient contents in the soil and plants were evaluated just after the corn harvest. On the other hand, the soybean yield was recorded for each of the agricultural years (1988/89, 1989/90 and 1990/91). The results have shown that none of the treatments caused a noticeable effect with regard to the physical and chemical modifications of the soil. Nevertheless there were some differences in the physical and chemical property values concerning the soil studies depths, and also the year-to-year soybean yield, and the treatment x year interaction, which have probably happened due to the distinct climatic conditions. From the observed and discussed result tendencies it was concluded that it is important to maintain the experiment for much longer periods of time and also to evaluate the properties at shorter time intervals in order to study their variability.
