Abstract in English
The objective of this research work was to study the participation of potassium and nitrogen and their ratios, in biochemical and physiological aspects of the accumulation, composition and translocation of sugars from the leaves to the stalks and to study the interrelationship between the N-3 - N reduction process and sugar concentration, in sugarcane plants cv. NA 5679. The sugarcane plants were grown in nutrient solution containing three different levels of K+ (0.1, 6 and 12 mM) and three different levels of N-3 - N (1.9 and 18 mM), with 9 different K-N combinations and 3 replicates of each. Data were collected at 2, 4 and 6 months after transplanting into the nutrient solutions. K+ concentration affected the composition, concentration, production and translocation of sugars from the leaves to the stalks. Increasing levels of potassium enhances the concentration and production of sucrose and total reducing sugars. (TRS), but decrease the concentration of reducing sugars (RS) and increase the translocation of sugars from the leaves to the stalks. K-deficient plants show an accumulation of reducing sugars and α-NH2 - N and a high leaf/stalk ratio in terms of dry matter and total reducing sugars (TRS). The accumulation of α-NH2 - N in the K-deficient plants was due probably to an unbalance between the rate of protein synthesis which decreases in these plants, and the rate of nitrate reduction which remains the same in either normal and K-deficient plants. It should be emphasized that the rate of accumulation of α-NH2 - N is also the same in the plants maintained in either condition. The nitrogen concentration affects the composition, concentration, production and translocation of sugars. N-deficient plants have a low concentration and production of sucrose and reducing sugars (RS) in the stalks. On the other hand, an accumulation of sucrose in the leaves and high leaf/stalk ratio are observed, which suggests a low rate of translocation of sucrose from the leaves to the stalks. Contrary to potassium, high nitrogen concentrations reduces the concentration and production of sucrose and total reducing sugars (TRS), and reduces the growth of the plants in terms of dry matter. The results suggest that there is an “optimum” K/N ratio in the leaves determining a maximum sucrose concentration in the stalks, since a narrow and positive correlation exists between the K/N ratio and sucrose percentage in the stalks.
