Nitrogen transfer from bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) to intercropped maize: evaluation using 15N - isotope dilution methods and mycorrhizal effect
Abstract in English
Nitrogen (N) transfer from bean to intercropped maize was studied under field conditions, using twelve lysimeters filled with Terra Roxa Estruturada (TE) soil previously cropped with maize fertilized with potassium nitrate at 60 % of atoms 15N excess. After the N-organic and mineral nitrogen soil fractions had reached the steady state, bean and maize plants were cropped alone or intercropped. Non-nodulating soybean was included in each lysimeter as a non-fixing crop control. Another experiment was carried out under glasshouse conditions in order to verify the effect of mycorrhizal fungi Glorus clarum on plant growth and on N-transfer from bean to maize plants. For this purpose, bean and maize were grown alone and together with and without mycorrhizal inoculum in washed sand. Data from the field experiment was collected 45 and 70 days after emergence (DAE), and the glasshouse experiment after 73 DAE. The following parameters were analysed: shoot dry weight, nodulation, total N, root mycorrhizal infection. N2 fixation and N-transfer from bean to maize. The field isotope dilution experiment, showed clear evidence of N-transfer, by 15N reducing the N content in intercropped maize compared with single maize plants. The N-transfer from bean to maize was estimated to be 3.8 kg N/ha, and nitrogen fixation was very high under these conditions (averaging 90% of total N). The mycorrhizal fungi Glomus clarum increased dry matter production and competitive ability of intercropped bean plants. The N-transfer was enhanced by mycorrhiza, and increased the total amount of N in the intercropped maize. Under these experimental conditions the N transfer from bean to intercropped maize showed little agronomic significance.
