Aluminum tolerance of tomato cultivars grown on soil and in nutrient solution
Abstract in English
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) is the most important vegetable crop in Brazil, not only because of its production, but also for its economic value. Generally, the tomato crop is grown in acid soils with low exchangeable calcium and/or Al3+ excess. Four experiments (two in acid soil and two in nutrient solution) were carried out to study the effects of liming and Al on the growth of tomato cultivars. In the first two experiments, the substrate red-yellow Podzolic soil-Laras, originally acid, was used to study the behavior of 16 tomato cultivars for the aluminum tolerance in the absence and presence of lime. The experiment was established in pots, under greenhouse conditions, to identify the tomato cultivars more tolerant to Al3+ levels. The levels of exchangeable Al3+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were determined to evaluate the change of the chemical characteristics of the substrate as a function of liming application rates. In order to obtain the values of aluminum saturation correlated with the dry matter, the tomato cultivars were classified in four groups based on their tolerance and sensitivity to Al3+ toxicity: tolerant responsive ( TR), tolerant and nonresponsive (TNR), sensitive and responsive (SR) and sensitive and nonresponsive (SNR). Cultivars Ângela gigante I 5100, Santa Clara, CNPH-253, Kada, CNPH-82 and Euromech were the most important with respect to Al3+ toxicity. The cultivars classified as (TR), showed, in general, a tendency to accumulate low levels of total Al3+ in the dry matter of the plant shoot. In other experiment, carried out in the same soil type, the objective was to study the effect of various liming levels (0; 1.5; 3.0; 4.5 and 6.0 meq/100 cm3+ of CaCO3 + MgCO3) in the chemical characteristics of a PVls, on plant growth, on the absorption, and on the total nutrient contents of cultivars Ângela gigante I 5100, IPA 5 and CNPH 81; there were positive effects of the liming on all mentioned characteristics. The other two experiments were carried out in nutrient solution, one of them to establish the levels of Al3+ to distinguish the degree of tolerance in tomato cultivars between levels of 0 and 6 mg Al3+/L, and the second one carried out to confirm the tolerance and sensitivity characteristics of the tomato cultivars Ângela gigante I 5100, IPA-5 and CNPH-81 when submited to levels between 0 and 3 mg Al3+/L, shown in the first experiment. It was observed the symptomatology characteristics of the Al3+ toxicity and the effect of Al3+ levels on the cultivars growth. It was concluded that the sixteen tomato cultivars had different tolerances to the excess of soil Al3+ and to the response to liming. The length of the biggest root in the Ângela gigante I 5100 and CNPH-81 cultivars in the levels of 2,25 and 3, 00 mg Al3+/L was reduced drastically 12 days after transference of plants to the solutions. The same tendency, was observed in relation to the root and shoot dry matter weight. The IPA-5 variety had also the dry weight reduced drastically, although there was no effect on the lenght of the biggest root. The symptoms of Al toxicity were more evident in the levels of 2.25 and 3.00 mg Al3+ /L; in the levels of 0.75 and 1.5 mg/L of Al3+ , the symptoms were less evident in the roots and even less evident in the shoots and also presenting black spots and necrotic foliole borders
