The bioactivity of alachlor and metribuzin under different water management in the soil, and the effects of metribuzin under the same conditions, on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril)
Abstract in English
To identify the causes of frequent failures to control weeds in soybean fields, when herbicides are applied in pre-emergency, there were evaluated the effects in the bioactivity of alachlor and metribuzin, when they were applied to a dry soil surface, and also the effects of the humidity content on their activities, after initial dry periods. Three green-houses experiments were carried out Horticultural Department of ESALQ-USP, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The study was made based on a randomized experimental delineation, with a factorial arrangement. There were evaluated: herbicides doses, water content in the soil and periods of herbicides exposure to a dry soil surface. Both experiments nº 1 and nº 2 utilized respectively, for test plant Sorghum bicolor L. and Cucumis sativus L. harvested 14 days after the beginning of the irrigations. In the experiment nº 3, soybean was harvested at the end of the cycle (150 days after the beginning of the irrigations). lrrigations. were always applied to the surface of the versels, through a rain simulator, and humidity content supporting was performed by two diary weighings, and the consumed water replacement. Alachlor and metribuzin bioactivity were dependent on the humidity content. Metribuzin presented the maximum efficiency when soil humidity content was about 37,60% em vol. and alachlor maximum efficiency occurred near the saturation point (47,60% em vol.). Also, the bioactivity of both products was more dependent on the soil humidity content after their exposure to dry initial periods. Both herbicides had their efficiency quickly decreased after the initial days of exposure to the dry soil surface. However, alachlor activity was more stable after a five days period under the dry doil surface condition. Underdoses of metribuzin showed stimulant effects, mainly when test-plants were developed under water deficit conditions, after an initial dry period. Metribuzin was more phytotoxic to soybean plants when the soil humidity content: was highest. Under that condition, metribuzin was very damaging to soybean (severe phytotoxity) and influenced negatively the water utilizing efficiency by soybean.
