Abstract in English
This research deals with the evaluation of the reaction of corn plants to defoliation at different stages of plant development, as well as its influence in the different components of yield and in the physiological quality of the seeds. The experiment was set in a Alfisol soil, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The experimental design was that of randomized blocks with four replications and seven treatments; (1) No defoliation (check); (2) Five leaves taken at the stage of fifth leaf; (3) Five leaves taken from the bottom at the stage of tenth leaf; (4) Five leaves taken from the top at the stage of tenth leaf; (5) Five leaves taken from the top at the flowering stage; (6) Five leaves taken from the top one week after the flowering period; (7) Five leaves taken from the top two weeks after the flowering period. The corn plant used was the cultivar Cargill-525, in plots compound by six 8 meter long lines, 0.90 meter apart from each other, with six plant per linear meter. The plant development was evaluated by using the technique of growth analysis through four periods of collecting of plants at 14 day intervals. The manual collecting was done 127 days after plant emergence and yield components, physiological quality of seeds and chemical composition of the seeds were evaluated. The results have indicated that the loss of five top leaves, near the flowering period, causes a significant fall in the crop productivity, mainly by the reduction of corn-cob length and weight and seed weight. The effect of defoliation also influences the physiological quality of seeds, by promoting the reduction of the germinative power.
