Mulch, tillage, and herbicide effects on weed control in double gropped soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]

Abstract in English
ln order to evaluate wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. ‘McNair 1813’ mulch, tillage and herbicide management effects on weed control, in double cropped soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cv. ‘Ramson’, field experiments were carried out at Clayton and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, USA, in 1981 and 1982. Soil types at the respective sites were ‘Wagram’ sandy loam, with 2% of organic matter (o.m.), and ‘Dunbar’ fine sand, with 1% o.m .. The mulch treatments used were: leaving, burning, removing, and removing and replacing: as soil management: no-till (NT) and reduced tillage (RT), done with two diskings at 10 cm depth; as herbicide management: paraquat at at 056 kg/ha plus surfactant at 0.2 % v/v and glyphosate at 1.08 kg/ha. Alachior and linuron residual herbicides were used with all treatments, except in extra treatments with paraquat with those variables before mentioned. A randomized block design experiment, with a factorial 4x2x2, and four replications were used. Soybean yields showed no differences for mulch managements under normal stands. Burning mulch reduced soybean stand and yield in a very dry planting season, and so by leaving mulch, with high moisture in the soil. Soil management showed no yield differences between NT and RT under similar stands. Herbicide management favored yields with paraquat as compared to glyphosate. No visual differences for weed species control in pre-planted soybeans were observed between glyphosate and paraquat. Combinations with alachior and linuron controlled Digitaria sanguinalis, Chenopodium album, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Mollugo verticillata and Amaranthus spp., with no control over Cyperus esculentus, lpomoea spp, and Triticum aestivum. Burning mulch reduced T. aestivum infestation and increased those of A. artemisiifolia, D. sanguinalis and M. verticillata, suggesting breaking of dormancy. Leaving mulch, without alachior and linuron reduced D. sanguinalis and M. verticillata; C. album and A. artemisiifolia were reduced by burning the mulch, in a dry planting season; Amaranthus spp. and C. esculentus were not affected by the mulch management, showing a trend for reduction of lpomoea spp. by leaving the mulch. NT reduced all weed species infestations, with any mulch management, but C. esculentus, which was reduced in RT. Mulct, and soil management interactions resulted in higher infestations of A. artemisiifolia in NT, with all mulch managements, but burning it, which increased lts infestation in RT. These results allow to conclude that: 1) wheat mulch burning restricts soybean crop establishment in a dry season, as well as leaving the mulch on soils with high level of moisture; both conditions are unfavorable for soybean germination; and 2) mulch and soil management may contribute, together with the use of herbicides, to weed control in soybeans.
