Abstract in English
Using correlation linear simple analysis, the behavior of several physical and chemical characteristics of latossols from the different brazilian regions were studied, as well as the relation among them, with the aim of recognizing one or more differential characteristics that could be used by the several classification systems. For considering a characteristic as a differential one, the following criteria were used: 1. degree of homogeneity of the characteristic as given by the coefficient of variation; 2. number of significant correlations linear simple between the characteristics at the 1% and 5% levels; 3. number of correlation with determination coefficiente (r2)higher than 50%. Based on these criteria, the relations Fe2O3 / sulfhuric attack (FEAS), Si02/Al2O3 + Fe2O3 (Kr), Fe2O3/ clay total (FEAR), Al2O3/Fe2O3 (ALFE) and Si02/Fe2O3 (SIFE), behaved as the best differential characteristics for these soils. The FEAS relation was proeminent among them. The relation Si02/Al2O3 (Ki), as well as the variables related to electrical charge characteristics, (T, TGRA, TSCA), were not adequate for differentiatting and separating the latosols. The results led to the separation of latosols along the following classes, which reflect the nature of the constituents and the extent of the al teration of soil materials: a) Latossolos Oxídicos hiperalterados; b) Latossolos Oxídicos hipoalterados; e) Latossolos Candíticos oxídicos; d) Latossolos Candíticos suboxídicos; e) Latossolos Candíticos marginais oxídicos; f) Latossolos Candíticos.
