Availability of copper and zinc to rice plants, from peat applied to soils of the state of parana, Brazil

Resumé en anglais
The availability of copper and zinc from peat was evaluated by means cf a greenhouse experiment in which rice plants were cultivated in samples cf Terra Roxa Estruturada-eutrophic samples of Terra and Dark-Red Latosol-alic, and in sand. These materials, placed in two liters pots in triplicate, were treated with peat in amounts equivalent te 0,15, 30 and 45 t/ha. The peat was collected from different depths (0-20, 90-100 and 140-150 cm), dried at 60 °C and ground. Distilled and deionized water was added up to 70 % of the retention capacity and five rica plants were grown to maturity. In a separate series of pots, rice plants were cultivated in the same manner except that peat from the three depths was used as the only substrate. Copper and zinc were evaluated as to the following parameters: concentration in plant, total amount in plants, concentration of total element in soil and concentration of the element extracted by HCl 0,1 N from the soil. In addition, the yield (mass) of dry matter from the tops and the yield of panicles were also measured. The natura (depth) of the peats and the different application rates of these materials had no effect on the concentration of copper and zinc in the tops of the rice plants and grains; however, copper concentration in the tops was influenced by the substrate, decreasing frcm Terra Roxa Estruturada to Dark-Red Latosol and te sand; zinc concentration, in turn, increased in the same direction. The application of peat from 0-20 cm to the soils increased the total amount of copper and zinc in the plants, especially in the Terra Roxa Estruturada; when applied in the Dark-Red Latosol and sand the concentrations were respectivelly lower. Total copper and zinc in the soils treated with peat decreased in the order Terra Roxa Estruturada > Dark-Red Latosol > sand. The application of 15, 30 or 45 t/ha of peat increased the total copper concentration of the soil, and for the Terra Roxa Estruturada the best rates were 30 and 45 t/ha. Total zinc concentraticn in the soil was not influenced by the application rate or nature of the peat. Soil concentration of copper and zinc extracted by HCl 0,1 N was higher in the Terra Roxa Estruturada, intermediate in the Dark-Red Latoacl and lower in the sand. The application of 15, 30 or 45 t/ha of peat increased the HCl 0,1 N extracted copper of the Terra Roxa Estruturada, but not of the Dark-Red Latosol or sand. For the zinc extracted by HCl 0,1 N, no effect of the nature and rate of application of the peat was observed. Applicaticn of increasing rates of peat to the soil resulted significant increments in yield of dry matter and grains, especially when the peat from 0-20 cm was added. Plants grown only in the peat from 0-20 cm yielded about thirty times more dry matter than plants cultivated in the peats from 90-100 cm and 140-150 cm. Grain yield was obtained only in the rice plants grown in the peat from 0-20 cm. The peat under study showed no measureble concentrations of the heavy metals chromium, cadmium and lead.
