Accumulation of dry matter and nutrients uptake by coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.) cv. Catuai growing in nutritive solution containing different levels of zinc at different pHs

Abstract in English
The investigation of the effect of the HOAGLAND and ARNON nutritive solution, with modifications, containing crescent levels of zinc at different pH on the growth of coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.) cv. Catuai was carried out. Zinc levels of 0,05, 0,10 and 0,20 ppm as zinc sulfate at pH of 4,5, 5,5 and 6,5 were used. Dry weight and nutrients concentrations were evaluated on the third, and fourth pair of leaves, in the total of leaves, in the branches and in the shoot of hawested plants. The relationship of the obtained results to the zinc levels and pHs indicated: - A higher effect of the zinc level on the third and fourth pair of leaves suggesting these plant parts to be move sensitive to the tested deficiency nutrition; - The pH of the nutritive solution did not affect of zinc uptake by the plants; - The zinc content in the third and fourth pair of leaves was directly related to the zinc concentration in nutritive solution; - The phosphorus concentration in the third and fourth pairs of leaves is a crescent quadratic equation of the zinc levels in the nutritive solution with the estimated maximum value occurring at 0,205% of phosphorus and 0,14 ppm of zinc; - The iron content in third and fourth pair of leaves was also directly related to the zinc concentration in the nutritive solution; - The increase on the zinc concentration of the nutritive solution caused an increase on the calcium and iron content and a decrease on the potassium content in the branches and an increase on the sulfur content in the whole plant; - The amount of phosphorus taken up by the coffee plant is reduced at zinc concentration higher than 0,13 ppm in the nutritive solution; - The uptake of boron ineveases urtill 0,13 ppm of zinc, but deeveases after that.
