Abstract in English
A study was carried out of the effect of salt content in irrigation water on some soil and rice crop characteristics, under greenhouse conditions, at the Agrometeorological Station of the Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, in Piracicaba, SP., Brazil. The experiment was carried out in 65 cm pots with 27 cm diameter, using 53 kg of soil from the Series “Sertãozinho”, in Piracicaba. The treatments were defined by adding 0, 2000, 4000, 6000 and 8000 ppm of chemically pure soluble salts to the irrigation water, resulting from a mixture (50% NaCl + 15% NaHCO3 + 15% CaSO4 + 10% MgSO4 + 10% CaCl2). An experimental design in completely randomized blocks was utilized, with 5 treatments and 5 replications. Twenty five days after germination, saline irrigation began to be applied daily . Evapotranspiration was determined, and phenologic data for the crop were recorded. Upon completion of the experiment the soil was leached by applying 40 mm up to 440 mm of water. Plant parts were collected separately, dried in an oven at 70°C, weighed and ground for calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulphur and chlore analysis. The results obtained showed that the salt levels in the irrigation water increased the cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation percentage (V%), exchangeable contents of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+ and Cl-, sodium absorption ratio (SAR), soil salt content, electric conductivity of saturation extract (CEse), but decreased the water retention capacity of the soil. Leaching the soil with 250, 400, 440 and 440 mm water was enough to reduce electric conductivity of drainage from 16 to 2; 27 to 2; 36 to 2 and 40 to 5 mmhos/cm at 25°C for treatments 2000, 4000, 6000 and 8000 ppm of soluble salts, respectively. Salt in the irrigation water unfavourably affected seed germination. The apex and edges of leaves presented symptoms of progressive burning; plant height, number of shoots, leaf area, production of grain and dry matter, evapotranspiration, were significantly decreased; and water consumption by gram of dry matter increased. A decrease was also noted for the amounts of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, SO2-4 and Cl- absorbed by the plants. Cubic effects for S4+ and K+ concentration and 4th degree effects for Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and Cl- were noted. On the other hand, the contents of these elements in the plant dry matter increased with treatments, as to: linear effects for Na+ and Ca2+ contents and quadratic effects for Mg2+, K+, SO2-4 and Cl-. However, the straw was the plant part which presented the highest content of Na+ and Cl- with values 4.38 and 7.20% , for the leaves, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and SO2-4 contents reached values 1.24; 0.52; 2.60 and 0.56%, respectively, both (straw and leaves) in the plants with the treatments with the highest salt level. The roots were the plant parts which concentrated lower contents of these elements.
