Influence of the soils chemical and physical attributes of a toposequence on the root development and the sugarcane (Saccharum spp L.) productivity

Abstract in English
An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station of the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, in order to evaluate the influence of soil chemical and physical attributes of a toposequence, particularly aluminium, on the productivity and root development of sugarcane and soil water content. The toposequence presents aluminium saturated soils on the summit, Rhodic Kandiudox; distrophic soils on the backslope, Rhodic Kandiudox and eutrophic soils on the footslope, Kandiudalfic Eutrudox. On it three treatments were implanted: control, lime and lime plus phosphogypsum, except on the Kandiudalfic Eutrodox. The lime dosis that was used was calculated to elevate the base saturation up to 60% using the sarne dosis of phosphogypsum for the treatments where both were applied. The objective of the use of phosphogypsum was to promote the modification of the soil' s chemical attributes, so that is why the sarne dosis of lime was used. The analysis and interpretation of the results allowed us to conclude that the effect of lime and phosphogypsum on the productivity of sugarcane, is related to the basic cations tenor in the soil. Taking into consideration only the aluminium content, it is not sufficient to determine a lower sugarcane root development; it also remained clear that a higher quantity of roots didn’t promote a higher productivity.
