Evolution of a sequence of clayey up to sandy soils in the Guayanan Complex of the occidental amazon

Abstract in English
TThe present work had as objective the characterization and genesis of a Latosol Plinthic Podzolic Latosol - Hydromorphic Quartzous Sand which is part of the Guayanan Complex in the Occidental Amazon. The area of study is located near the.Km 160 of the BR-174, which connects Manaus to Caracaraí, and represents a hill formed by clayey soils in the higher parts ending in an valley of sandy bottom, with strong hydromorphism. ample The temperature regimes of the soils are isohyperthermic and hyperthermic and the moisture regimes are udic and aguic, in the higher parts and valley bottom respectively. Six trenches were open and core samples were examinated in extra six sites for characterization of the pedologic cover. After the morphologic descriptions, four soil profiles representatives of the three sequence segments (latosolic, transition region, and hydromorphic domain) were selected for the study of physical, chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological characteristica of their components. The higher parts of the sequence are dominated by Red-Yellow Latosol, the transition region by Plinthic Podzolic Red- Yellow Latosol, and the lower parts by Hydromorphic Quartzous Sand. The parent material of the soils of all the sequence is heterogeneous and poorly selected, derived from granitic rocks of the Guayanan Complex. Chemically, the soils are leached with high aluminum saturation. ln the higher parts of the sequence the textural gradient is amaller and the clay fraction is constituted by Kaolinite and iron oxides mainly in the crystalline forma. Downslope the textural gradient increases and the iron forms are less crystallines. fraction loss At the valley bottom the process of the fine (due to the hydromorphism) is completed, remaining a sandy deep mantle. The iron oxides disappear, remaining the Kaolinite, although in smaller proportions. Also were found mica in the deeper parts of the profiles and chloritized vermiculite in the upper parts. The sequence evolution is processed mainly by the degradation of the latosolic material of the higher portions of the landscape.
