Phosphorus transformations in acid soil, and its availability to upland rice (Oryza sativa, L.) crop
Keywords in English

Abstract in English
Transformations of tripie superphosphate (SPT) and portially solubi lized Araxa rock phosphate (FAPS) in two latosols under Cerrado vegetation were studied, i n two experiments carried out ln greenhouse. The objectives were to quantify and correlate the content of inorganic forms of phosphorus with the content of ”available” phosphorus obtained in different extractants, to verify the effect of reaction time of phosphates with the soil and to evaluate the efficiency of FAPS as source of phosphorus to the upland rice crop. ln the first experiment, soil sample with and without lime were incubated f or 180 days , in which phosphates had been mixed at the rate of 200 ppm of P according to the incubation period: 180, 135, 90, 45 and 0 days. At the end of lncubation period and immediately prior to the seeding, soil samples were col lected for analysis; 2.5 kg of soil were transfered to the ceramic pots and rice, IAC-165 cultivar, were sown. The treatments consisted of combinations of two soils, two rates of lime (without and amount enough to raise the pH to 6.5) and five incubation time. The soil P fractionation, ”available” P determined by four extractants (Mehlich, Olsen + EDTA, Bray-l and Resin), the dry matter yield and the absorved P were utilized as the evaluating parameters. The second experiment was carried out with the objective of obtaining the response curve of rice to SPT in each soil, with and without liming. Based on the regression equations of response curves and on the dry matter yields of above ground parts, the equivalencies of two phosphates to SPT for each incubation time were calculated. The rates of P used were 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 ppm P. Cons i de·r i ng the e ffec t of the two phospha tes, liming and incubation time used in this work, the content of inorganic phosphates decrease in the following sequence P - Fe > P - Ca > P - Al > P – NH4Cl in the Red Yellow Latosol (LVd) and P - Fe ? P - Al > P - Ca > NH4Cl for Dark Red Latosol (LEd). Depending on the soil type, liming alters unevenly the content of the di fferent fractions of soi l P. There is na increase in the P -NH4Cl and P - Ca content in the LVd, while in the LEd occurs a reduction in the P-Al contents, an increase in the P -NH4Cl content and no alteration in the P-Fe and P - Ca content. With the addltion of SPT, signlficantly higher content of P -NH4Cl, P - Al and P - Fe are obtained in both soils, compareci to FAPS. The addition of this phosphate (FAPS), increases the content of P-Ca form, i n both soils. The amounts of differents P fractions extracted are not affected by incubation time, from 45 to 180 days. ln the soils fertilized with SPT, irrespective of the liming, the Mehlich, Olsen + EDTA and Bray-l solutions extract P predominantly from P -NH4Cl and P-Fe fractions. When fertiIized with FAPS, these solutions extract more P from P - Ca fractions. These relations are also observed in the plant response. With increasing incubation time there is a decrease in the ”available” P contents extracted with Olsen+EDTA, Bray-l and Resin. The sarne occurs with regard to the plant variables considered, in which there is a sharp decrease in dry matter yield, P content and P stored in the above ground part, the highest values being obtained when the sowing is done immediately after the application of phosphates. The equivalency of the two phosphates to SPT decreases with increasing incubation time, being always FAPS equivaleney lower at all incubation times, mainly in the limed soils, except in LVd when the FAPS is applied in time zero. The agronomic efficiency of FAPS compared to SPT´s ·varies inconsistently with incubation time, presenting at time zero an higher efficiency than the SPT´s one. However, considering all the incubation times, the FAPS is less effective than SPT, mainly in the treatments with lime.
