SOLOS CAULINÍTICOS COESOS

Abstract in English
The main objective of this work was determine the possible causes that originated the formation of compacted soils in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Escola Superior de Agricultura 'Luiz de Queiroz', Piracicaba (SP), and at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (SP). Aracruz county, is 19°49'03'' S latitude 40°15'13'' WG longitude, is limited on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the soils occurring in the region are characterized bya a pedogenetically compacted profile hindering root penetration and a penetration impediment to root systems. To characterize these soils, physical, chemical and mineralogic studies were conducted in order to explain the genetic process of compaction. It was concluded that the main causes acting are related to a low iron content, low base content, and organic matter, having only kaolinite as clay mineral. These result in high density low total porosity, a predominance of micropores and higher % of small aggregates.
