Abstract in English
B horizons of 2 Latossol Roxo profiles. occurring in the Piracicaba municipality. were selected for a study having as main objectives the determination of origin of parent material and the presence of li thological descontinuities. The sand fractmon of these horizons was used for this purpose. The following observations were done: quantitative qualitative mineralogical composition of transparent minerals, occurrence of magnetic minerals, particle distribution and roundness of the light fraction. The iffterpretation of the resul ts obtained led to the following conclusions: 1) The Latossol Roxo profiles studied are composed of homogeneous material from the standspoint of their particle size distribution. 2) Parent material results mainly from the weathering of basic eruptive rocks. Material from Botucatu sandstone contributed for the formation of their sand fraction. 3) Evidence of lithological discontinuity was found only in the behavior of transparent heavy minerals. The results do not confirm the discontinuity suggested by the stoneline present in profile 2. It is theorized in this opportunity that if further studies indicate more positively the existence of discontinity a correspondence will exist between profile 2 and the lower horizons of profile 1.
