Aluminum on the growth and on nutrient concentration of diferent sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp.)
Abstract in English
A greenhouse experirnent was carried out with the objective of assessing the influence of alurninurn on sugarcane, where 7 cultivars (NA56-79, CPSl-22, IAC58-480, CB53-98, CB41-76, IAC51-205 and IAC52-150) were tested in the presence of 5 levels of Al3+ (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 pprn) in nutritive solution. An entirely randornized experimental design, consisting of spli t plots, wi th 4 replications was ernployed. The plots consisted of Al levels, and th·e sub-plots of cultivars. The seedling were obtained through planting single buds in boxes containing washed sand. The seedlings were transplanted to pots containing 15 liters of nutri tive solution 22 days after planting and maintained in a solution without aluminurn for 26 days. After this period of time, the nutritive solution was renewed by adding aluminum at previously established concentrations; before completion of the experiment, this operation was repeated once again. The experiment was harvested 35 days after the addition of aluminum to the nutritive solution. During this phase of plant development, the pH of the solution was maintained at values between 3.8 and 4.2 by employing diluted HCl or NaOH. Aluminum effects on sug arcane was assessed in function of data on dry matter produced and contents of macronutrients and aluminum in the roots, stalks and leaves. In addition to aluminum levels, differences between cultivars in producing root and leaf dry matter (dry matter from roots and leaves} were recorded. Aluminum affected dry matter yields in cultivars IAC58-480 and CB41-76. Root dry matter production proved to be the best parameter for evaluating the effect of Al on sug arcane. Estimated Al concentrations of 1. 56 and 7. 49 ppm in nutritive solution were sufficient to depress root weight by 20% in cultivars IAC58-480 and CB41-76, respectively, as compared to the treatment without Al. There were effects, of Aluminum on the concentration of sorne elements in the roots (K, Ca, Mg, s, and Al), in the stalks (N, Ca, Mg, and Al}, and in the leaves (Ca, Mg, s, and Al) of several cultivars. It was not possible to relate these pffects to production data.
