CARACTERÍSTICAS DO SOLO
LATOSSOLOS AMARELOS

Abstract in English
In the Amazon Region two climatically distinct areas of Yellow Latosol (OXISOLS) derived from silte-sandy soil of the Tertiary (Solimões and Barreiras formation) were selected. The area number one, in the climatic type Af (without a dry season, perudic and the area number two in the climatic type Am (with a short dry season, udic). Six profiles of each were selected for routine and mineralogic A and B horizonts determinations. Mineralogically the soils were grouped as follows: soils of the climatic type Af, (a) soils with the predominance of kaolinite and gibbsite, (b) soils with the predominance of kaolinite and presence of 2:1 minerals (mica, vermiculite and smectite, this in reasonable quantity). The soils in the climatic type Am have predominance of kaolinite. The feldspars occur only in some profiles of area number one. The chemical characteristics related with the content of lime, organic matter and CEC also accompany the mineralogical data. The climatic type, in this case, did not have the influence expected in the development of the soils. The differences in mineralogy of the parent material. Thus, some profiles classified initially as OXISOLS cannot be part of this order of soils.
