Mineral nutrition of celery (Apium graveolens L. var. dulce). I. Growth, concentration and accumulation of nutrients for cultivar "Cornell 6-19". II. Calcium doses affecting growth and concentration of macronutrients and micronutrients of cultivars "Golden Detroit" e "Cornell 6-19"
Resumé en anglais
Cerely (Apium graveolens L. var. dulce) is a vegetable that is not very much cultivated in Brazil but nowadays its cultivation has been expanded because of the increasing use of it mainly by desidrated soup industries. As the countries that tradicionally cultivate cerely have presented serious nutricional problems, this work was proposed with next objectives: (a) to establish the growth rate of cerely plant; (b) to verify the concentration and accumulation of nutrients during its developing cycle; (c) to examine the effects of increasing doses of calcium in the development and production; (d) to describe the symptoms of calcium deficiency and of excess of calcium supply; (e) to verify the differences of resistance to the blackheart anomaly between the cultivars "Cornell 6-19" e "Golden Detroit". To attair these objectives field trial and green house experiment were realized and to these results were obtained: - the accumulation of dry matter by the plant aerial parts was slow at the begining of its cycle and became very accelerated 20 days before harvesting, accumulating 51,7% of the total dry matter in this period; - the N concentration by the plants aerial parts decreased gradually till maturity; - the concentration of P, Mg and S during the cycle were pratically inalterated although the concentrations of Ca and K were very variable; - the micronutrients concentrations did not present a defined comportment during the cycle with exception of Mn that increased significantly with the development of the culture; - at 100 days after the transplantation the accumulation by the plant aerial parts, in a decreasing order, were: K - 5.36 g; N - - 1.47 g; Ca - 1.47 g; S - 0.52 g; P - 0.49 g; Mg - 0.44 g; Fe - 56.8 mg; Mn - 14.8 mg; Zn - 8.49 mg; B - 5.81 mg e Cu - 0.79 mg, for each plant; - it was possible to characterize a deficiency of Ca in both cultivars; - the cultivar "Golden Detroit" presented greater resistance to the symptoms of Ca deficiency than the cultivar "Cornell 6-19"; - in the young leaves of both cultivars the symptoms of calcium deficiency were observed in treatments with nutrient solutions with Ca concentration equal or inferior to 150 ppm; - the increasing of Ca concentration in the nutrient solution favoured the growing of cerely plants and consequently there was a greater accumulation of dry matter in the doses with higher concentrations; - the Ca concentration at the plant aerial parts of both cultivars increased in the plants cultivated in nutrient solution with Ca concentration higher than 150 ppm; where were used Ca concentration fewer than 150 ppm this correlation was not observed; - the increasing of the Ca concentration in the nutrient solution induced a decrease in the Mn concentration at the plants aerial parts.
