Title in Portuguese
Estudos sobre a redistribuição do enxofre no feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.) cv. Carioca)
Keywords in Portuguese

NUTRIÇÃO VEGETAL
Title in English
Studies on the redistribution of sulphur in the bean plant (Phaseolus vulgaris L., var. Carioca)
Abstract in English
This paper deals with the results of an experimental designed to study the redistribution of radioactive sulphur previously taken up the bean plant grown in full strenght and sulphur deficient nutrient solution. All plants initially received labelled (35S in the substrate. Afterwards a group of plants was kept in the presence of the tracer until the main stem developed (stage E1 = 24 days); a second group received radioactive sulphur until the period of full blooming (E2 = 52 days); a third group, finally, was kept in the presence of radiosulphur till maturity of the pods (E3 = 84 days). In each stage plants were collected for analysis, total and sulphate sulphur being determined in their organs, as well as the corresponding radioactivity. Redistribution of the labelled sulphur was observed in all cases. S-deficient plants showed a higher degree of redistributíon on a percentage basis of the previously cumulated; in absolute terms, however, the phenomenon was more marked in the non deficient plants. Leaves were the most important reservoir of sulphur for redistribution. Evidence is presented which suggests that sulfate-S is the form used for redistribution.
