Effect of the thermal treatment of nepheline-syenite and dolomitic limestone mixtures on the availability of potassium to corn (Zea mays L.) under green-house condition
Resumé en anglais
The purpose of this work was to study the effect of the calcined nepheline-syenite (NS) of Poços de Caldas mixed with dolomitic limestone (DL) on the availability of its potassium to corn. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse. A soil sample was collected from the surface layer of a Red Yellow Podzolic soil, distrophic, clay texture and treated with CaCO3 R.G. The nepheline-syenite and dolomitic limestone were ground and passed through a 150-mesh sieve, and then mixed in 2 proportions: proportion 1, 50% of NS and 50% of DL; proportion 2, 75% of NS and 25% of DL. The mixed materials were calcined at 1,000, 1,100, 1,200, 1,300°C, and fusion. After cooling, they were once more ground and passed through a 150-mesh sieve. The 3 levels of potassium treatments were 50, 100, and 150 ppm. The experimental design was a 5 x 2 x 3 + 4 factorial layed out at random with 3 replications. The factors were 5 different calcination temperatures, 2 proportions of nepheline-syenite and dolomitic limestone, 3 levels of potassium of the rock mixtures, and 4 addicional treatments consisting of one control and 3 levels of potassium applied as KCl. Three successive cultivations were carried out in the same soil in order to study the residual effect of rock material. Corn was used as an indicator plant. The aboveground part of plant was harvested 50 days after seeding, dried, weighed, and ground for K, Ca, and Mg analysis. Potassium release rate and equilibrium concentration of potassium of the calcined rock materials in water were studied in the laboratory. It was observed that the treatments with nephline-syenite and dolomitic limestone in the proportion were superior in the dry-matter production, as well as in the potassium accumulation in the aboveground part, than those of the proportion 2. With respect to the calcination temperature, a definite tendency of its effect was observed only in the treatments with proportion 1. In the first cultivation the dry-matter production and accumulation of potassium in plants were superior in the treatments of 1,100°C calcination temperature. However, in the second and third cultivations, the treatments of the fusion were superior than others. The dry-matter production and the accumulation of potassium in the plants increased with the levels of potassium applied. Relative efficiency of the treatments of fusion and of 1,100°C calcination temperature in the proportion 1, with respect to potassium accumulation, was 50 and 47.5% respectively, in relation to KCI applied in the level of 150 ppm. Calcination and addition of dolomitic limestone to the nepheline-syenite increased a release of its potassium in water, and the largest valor was observed in the proportion 1 with the calcination temperatures of 1,000 and 1,100°C. The calcined rock materials acted as an amendment for soil acidity and as a source of K, Ca, and Mg.
