Photointerpretation of watersheds and draining network circular samplings from the Cardoso Island State Park soils (SP)
Abstract in English
The area of Cardoso Island State Park is located in the extreme south of the sea-coast of São Paulo State - Brazil, and the soil mapping units studied were: Ortho Red-Yellow Latosols (LV); Red-Yellow Podzolic intergrading to Red-Yellow Latosols (PVL) and Lithosol-granitic gneiss substratum phase (Li-gr). Aerial photografies were used in a study to show quantitatively and qualitatively the composition of natural drainage systems. The characteristics of drainage pattern of three soil mapping units, through 10 km2 circular samples and through watershed which were selected by the principles of geometrical similarly and same order of ramification. The present paper studies the correlations between the land escapes and aerial photografies characteristics of three soil units with emphasis on the c composition and on the characteristics of the draining network, related with differences among the soils. The analysis and discussion of results obtained made possible the following conclusions: - the quantitative analysis of drainage pattern attributes was efficient for the separation of soils morphogenetically different, with a significant rate; - the parameters: number, total lenqht and mean length of river segments correlated with the third order watershed ramification order were the most sensible to differentiate the soil units; - changes in the qualitative characteristics of drainage pattern show one geological control (lithologic and/or structural); - the parameters which describe drainage pattern appeared to be good for differentiating the three soil units in two sampling types; being the watersheds showed best results compared to circular sampling; - the parameters which differ drainage pattern showed best results for the unity PVL than for the unity LV and Li-gr, independent on the sampling types; - in watersheds the texture ratio was the most significant index for the differentiation among the soil units followed by drainage density, river frequency and mean length of river. ln circular sampling, these index exhibited decreasing efficiency degree in the following order: mean length of river, river frequency, texture ratio and drainage density; - the modifications in the drainage pattern were the propriety and constitution of the studied soil, profundity and characteristics of rocky substratum and the condition of the relief site.
