Effects of rotary tillage on some physical characteristics of the soil
Abstract in English
The main objective of this work was to study the effect of soil preparation, employing a rotary tiller, on some physical characteristics of a clay textured soil. A randomized block design experiment was conducted with 9 treatments plus an untilled plot, as a check, and four replications. The treatments consisted of all possible combinations of three rotary speeds (R1 = 122.36 rpm; R2 = 172.74 rpm, and R3 = 217.52 rpm) and three heights of the impact plate corresponding to 108, 69, and 40 degrees angles, formed with the normal direction of the soil surface. The following parameters were determined from the soil layer just below the radius of action of the tines: dry unit weight, total unit weight, degree of saturation, porosity, void ratio, penetration resistance, and unconfined compressive strength. Also determined were the aggregate stability and the soil water content for the 0-15 cm surface layer. The results showed no significant differences among the preparation treatments. However, when compared with the untilled plot it was detected a significant increase in the dry unit weight, total unit weight, penetration resistance, and a reduction on porosity and void ratio. Higher rotation speeds and small height of the impact plate reduced the aggregate stability.
