Photographic interpretation of relief and drainage network characteristics of two soils occurring in Brasilia, Federal District
Abstract in English
This work was undertaken with the purpose of evaluating the efficiency of the relief and drainage características of two soil mapping units. The data were obtained through available aerial photographs of Federal District (Brasilia). The soil mapping units selected for the study were a Latosol and a Cambisol. Each of those two soil units was represented by six third order basins, selected for their homogeneity and geometrical similarity, and six circular samples of 5 km2 each. The analysis and interpretation of the results obtained for the two mapping units allowed for the following general conclusions: a) relief and drainage characteristics were eficient parameters to differentiate among soils; b) relief characteristics that indicated differences among soils were altimetric, mean height, orographic coefficient, relief ratio and the massive coefficient; c) sampling criteria adapted were efficient to differentiate among soils particularly for hydrographic basins; d) the quantitative characteristics of the drainage network measured in the hidrographic basins and in the circular samples that led to the separation of the two soil classes were the following: total and average lenght, drainage density, river frequency, textural ratio, lenght of surfance run, performance coefficient, mean textyre ratio and class of topograph texture; e) the number of river segments determined from circular samples indicated difference among soils; f) the average ratio of mean length showed differences among the soils; g) the model utilized independently or combined with other descriptive characteristics of the drainage pattern, indicated differences among soils but not with the same degree of certainty as the quantitative indexes; h) a highly significant linear correlation was observed between all the characteristics and the drainage pattern, regardless of the sampling method and of the soil.
