Influence of topping of stalk in the technological quality of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.)
Abstract in English
One of the fundamental aspects in support of higher sugarcane agro-industrial yields is the quality of this sugarcane as an industrial raw material. This depends on a series of factors-such as variety, climatic crop cycle, time of cutting during the season harvest, cultivation, height of topping and others. The topping of stalk, a conventional harvest practice, is to improve the quality of the raw material. This paper was conducted to evaluate the influence of the different heights of topping in the chemical and technologic quality of sugarcane and, therefore, the results of its use as an industrial raw material. With the above objectives, a trial was set up in second ratoons of NA56-79, SP70-1143, SP71-1406, IAC48/65 and RB725828 varieties and randomized block design with three levels of topping: untopping, topping +5 and topping +8 (Figure 2). The following conclusions were obtained: - there was a decrease in the quality of sugarcane according according to increased height of topping, however the quality in untopped canes was constantly low; - the difference of weight between untopped canes and topped was approximately 16.8% and the profit in the price obtained for untopped canes was 14.28%; - the height at which cane can be topped without detriment to quality increases as the season progresses; - the Brix % juice, pol % juice, pol % cane, total sugar % juice, moisture % cane and pol % cane (PCTS*) results, are a square function of harvest time at different topping heights; - the untopped sugarcane presented the highest pol and reducing sugar values in tons per unit of area; - the topping +8 sugarcane reached the highest price per ton of sugarcane; - the highest prices per unit area was obtained at the topping +5 for varieties NA56-79, SP71-1406 and IAC48/65; unstopping for variety BP70-1143, and topping +8 for variety RB725828.
