Reproductive biology and vegetative propagation of Vanilla chamissonis Klotzsch: subsidies for the sustained harvest
Resumé en anglais
The Vanilla chamissonis Klotzch is an orchid that occurs at sandplain rain forest vegetation of the São Paulo State. The fruits of this species possess, after processing, flavor and aroma adapted for nutritious and aromatic use, with an internaI and externaI market promising. Studies on the reproductive biology of natural coastal settlements of the V. chamissonis K. and about the vegetative propagation of the species were made. The floral biology was studied through both diurnal and nocturnal observation of the flowers, being monitored all the events from the anthesis to the senescence. Any effective pollination agent of the flowers of the V. chamissonis was not verified, just plunderers and visitors. In order to study the reproductive system of the species, 4 different treatments were applied to the flowers. As result 78% represents the success in the induced autogamy, against 6,06% in the autogamy without induction. It was still obtained 75,76% in the induced allogamy and 15,16% in the allogamy. The result corroborates information of Childers (1959), Hoehne et al. (1949), e Dessler (1990), the drop natural rate of fruits production and the predominance of vegetative propagation as strategy to the development of the settlements of the species. Such values still indicate the great potential for production of fruits, since the pollination is induced. The success values for the fruits acquisition for the lot of testimony flowers can serve as reference for definition of the intensity of exploration of this resource, under sustained harvest, as the natural rate of production of fruits; in those settlements The ripe fruits, picked 10 months after the handling, indicate great rate of survival, with close values to the 80%. The resulting fruits of the induced allogamy possess larger dimensions (medium length of 18 cm and medium diameter of 3 cm) than the others. The aim of the study of vegetative propagation of Vanilla was to increase production the roots by the stakes, in way to guarantee their survival and optimization of the development of new plantings. Tests were accomplished with stakes in the V. chamissonis, by the application of AIA and AIB, in paste, in the concentration of 3000 ppm. Aerial and terrestrial roots had developed along the stakes but statistical tests had showed however that there are no significant differences to each other. The death percentage in the experiment was accentuated (50%). The contribution to the knowledge of the characteristics of the V. chamissonis K. indicated the biological possibility of accomplishment of a harvest under maintainable revenue of this species, since solved disputes of social and legal order.
