COMPACTAÇÃO DOS SOLOS
EUCALIPTO

Effects of soil compactation on Eucalyptus toreliana F. Muell and Eucalyptus grandis Hill Ex Maiden seedlings
Abstract in English
The effects of soil compactation on Eucalyptus toreliana F. Muell and E. grandis Hill ex Maiden seedlings maintened under greenhouse condictions were evaluated through tap, lateral and total root systems biomass, tap root diameter, first- order lateral root number, root lenght, root surface, shoot height and biomass in relation to soil compactation. This work was carried out in the greenhouse of the Departamento de Ciências Florestais, of the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz"/USP, in Piracicaba-SP, from February 15 to July 13, 1988. The soil density used were 0.96 - 0.97 g.cm3 for uncompacted soil and 1.50 g.cm3 for compacted soil. From the assessed variables for the root systems, only the lateral and total biomass within blocks showed significant effects due to the compactation. First-order lateral root nurnber, root lenght and surface, tap root diameter and biomass showed significant differences only in relation to the utilized species. The root architeture evaluated through the distribution of the first-order lateral roots showed that E. grandis trend to concentrate them in the root collar while E. toreliana trend to distrib them along the tap root. This observation could be an indicative of a better adaptation of E. toreliana to soil with compacted superficial layer. Significant differences of shoot height and biomass were observed only in relation to the species effect.
