Genetoic variation for oleoresin yield and growth characters in a population of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. On the Itapetininga region
Abstract in English
This work is a study of the phenotypic variation of the oleoresin yield of a Pinus elliottii var. elliottii population on the Itapetininga region, and the genetic variation of this population using phenotipically selected trees. The research was conducted at the "Estação Experimental de Itapetininga, of the do Instituto Florestal", involving two samples of the population and a progeny trial in a triple lattice design with 100 ( 10x10) treatments, including the progenies of selected trees of the population, progenies from South Africa seed orchard and commercial sources from the State of São Paulo as control. The results showed a very high variation in the oleoresin yield among individuals which was very superior to that of growth characters. The average yield per tree during the oleoresin extraction period was 2813 g, and the yield function increased continuously up to an abrupt decreased, which occurred in conjunction with the temperature fall in the end of the extraction period. It was noticed that the first 60 days of extraction was enough to evaluate the total yield. The progenies of the selected trees in the population were superior to the controls, as far as growth characters are concerned, but inferior to the progenies of the South Africa seed orchard, in alI ages studied. Based on the oleoresin yield character the South Africa progenies were superior to the progenies from selected trees of Itapetininga and the controls, but some of them were among the best producers and some, others were among the worst ones. This was considered normal because there was no selection for character. The phenotypic coefficient of variation among progenies for oleoresin yield was 60.30 %. This value is higher than the cylindrical volume (31.02%), dbh (12.92 %) and height (9.93%) values. The narrow sense heritability at plant level for oleoresin yield was 0.47, superior to the heritability for height (0.39), dbh (0.36) and (0.41), at the same age. The genetic gain forecast for oleoresin yield character in one generation was 100-110%, as a consequence of the high values of the phenotypic variation and heritability. The genetic gain forecast for oleoresin yield character in one generation was 100-110%, as a consequence of the high values of the phenotypic variation and heritability. The transformation of the progeny trial in a seedling seed orchard gives genetic gain forecast for the oleoresin yield around 60.31 %. The selection based on cylindrical volume, dbh, and height gives genetic gains of 24.50%, 8.30 % and 8.32%, respectively. The correlated results for growth characters due to the selection for height, dbh and cylindrical volume were expressive; for the oleoresin yield character the correlated forecast due to the selection for growth characters was low. The results suggest that in Pinus elliottii var. elliottii independent selection programs have to be developed for the growth characters and for the oleoresin yield
