Variation of basic density and anatomical and chemical characteristics of wood of Eucalyptus spp
Abstract in English
Basic density is a parameter of wood quality very much used in several areas of forestry science. It is a result of anatomical characteristics and chemical composition of the wood. It varies widely between and within several genera, species and genetic material. The origin of density is fairly well known. However, the influence of each characteristics of the wood on its basic density has not been measured. In order to obtain this information we investigated: the variation of basic density, anatomical elements and chemical composition of wood, and the influence of these characteristics on wood density between and within species of Eucalyptus grandis, E. saligna and E. urophylla. The samples were collected from seven-year-old trees in the county of Santa Rosa do Viterbo, State of São Paulo. Thirty trees of each species were sampled. In each tree, discs were removed at the base, breast height, 25, 50, 75, and 100 per cent of commercial height. In each disc, two different regions were sampled: one inner (near the pith) and the other one near the bark. For each sample the basic density was determined. For the chemical and anatomical tests, six trees randomized of each species were used at heights 25 and 75 per cent, and at the inner and outer regions of the disc. The content of holocellulose, lignin, and total extractives, the diameter and percentage of vessels, the lenght, width, wall thickness, and lumen diameter of the fibers were determined. Using the relationship between fiber dimensions, the Runkel's index, wall fractions, felting coefficient and coefficient of flexibility were obtained. Relationships between the characteristics investigated and variation models for basic density were established from the results. According to the results there was considerables variation for the wood characteristics between species and within of the trees. The number of characteristics that show a relationship to basic density is small and is related to the species and to the positions inside the tree. The characteristics that had most influence on the density were the anatomical ones. The chemical composition of the wood by itself does not influenced this property. For E. saligna and E. grandis most of the influence on the density takes place through the wall thickness and lumen diameter of the fiber. These relationships can also be explained through Runkel's index and wall fraction. The wood of E. urophylla showed no significant relationship to the investigated characteristics.
