VIVEIROS FLORESTAIS

Nursery characterization and evaluation of Eucalyptus spp. hybrids from open pollination
Abstract in English
In this work, hybrids of Eucalyptus saligna x E. tereticornis and of Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis produced through open pollination were evaluated in relation to their behavior and the most important characteristics for their identification and consequent selection in the nursery at the 3rd and 8th months of age. The hybrid Eucalyptus saligna x E. tereticornis was obtained from seeds collected in two Eucalyptus saligna Smith trees planted in a row within three rows of Eucaliyptus tereticornis Smith. While, the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis was obtained from seeds collected in two Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden trees planted in a row within three rows of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. The hybrids were compaired to their respective parenta1 species from the same provenance and seed lots. For the hybrid Eucalyptus saligna x E. tereticornis identification, the most important characteristics were: plant height; leaf lenght, width and color and petiole lenght. Based on leaf characteristics, five phenotypic types were identified for this breed. The hybrid showed deep root system (tap root) like Eucalyptus tereticornis. The hybrid showed to be vigorous at both ages of evaluation. Several flower buds were observed in some plants at the 8th months age evaluation. For the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis identification, the most important characteristics were: leaf lenght, width and color; petiole lenght and lignotuber presence. The lignotuber was observed only at the 8th month of age. Based on leaf characteristics and lignotuber presence, two hybrid phenotipical types were identified at the 3rd month of age. While, four phenotipical types were identified at the 8th month of age. The hybrid showed a root system like Eucalyptus grandis and did not show superiority in relation to the parental species at both ages of evaluation. In the two breeds studied, the phenotypical evaluation understimated the percentage of hybrids at the 8th month of age. The hybrid identification percentage were 40% and 72% for Eucalyptus saligna x E. tereticornis and 13% and 33% for Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis respectively at the 3rd and 8th months of age evaluations. The discriminant analysis identified 70% and 83% for Eucalyptus saligna x E. tereticornis and 62% and 57% for Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldalensis of hybrids respectively at the 3rd and the 8th months of age evaluations. These high values were attributed to the high number of plants with intermediary aspect of difficult identification, and in some of the cases, to the choice of characteristic that would not allow a good discrimination of the genetic material. The hybrids showed different segregation patterns of the characteristics.
