Title in English
Phenotypic and genetic variation in clones of Eucalyptus urophylla S.T Blake from Flores Island (Indonesia)
Abstract in English
This paper deals with study of phenotypic variation among 45 clones the of Eucalyptus urophylla from Flores Island using Numerical Taxonomy techniques and characterization of genetic variation within the groups. This experiment was laid out in January 1986 in an area of the Champion Pulp and Paper Company, located in the Aguaí County, State of São Paulo, Brazil. A randomized block design was used with 3 replications and 10 trees per plot, in a row. Data were collected at age 3.5, 5 and 6. The objectives of this study were: i. to make a cluster analysis to classify the clones, and ii. the calculation of genetic parameters. In the cluster analysis, the clones (Operational Taxonomy Units, OTU's) were evaluated using 3 sets of different characters, seven were quantitative, six nominal-qualitative and ten ordinal-qualitative. Similarity among the basic matrix taxonomy units was evaluated by using coefficients as the Average Taxonomy Distance coefficient -on quantitative data-, and the Jaccard coefficient -om qualitative data. The estimation of such coefficients then led to a so-called "Similarity Matrix", which revealed the structure of the taxonomic units after the application of the Unweighted Pair-Group Method Using Arithmetic Averages, (UPGMA). The result was drawn as a "dendrogram", from which 5 groups were selected as they best represented the taxonomic structure of the clones. Subsequently, the genetic parameters of the groups were obtained, -stating them with respect to diameter, height and cylindrical volume traits-, in order to get information about the genetic gain. The results show the order of importance the different groups deserve, Group 2 being outstanding in terms of genetic gain.
