Above - ground biomass and nutriente distribution in stands of Pinus oocarpa Schiede planted in the state of São Paulo
Resumé en anglais
The distribution of the above-ground biomass and macronutrient (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and micronutriente (Na, Fe, Mn, Zn) content of the trees were studied on 8, 14 and 18 years sold stands of Pinus oocarpa Schiede planted in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Forty-five trees were sampled to determine the biomass and nutrient content of wood, bark, branches and needles. The stratified tree technique was used to convert sample trees data to a land area basis. These data were combined with data on chemical concentrations and used to estimate the distribution of nutrients elements in different above-ground biomass componentes of the stands. The estimated abave-ground biomass were 106, 139 and 174 tonnes/ha in the 8,14 and 18 years old stands, respectively. This distribution were observed decreasing in the following order: bolewood, bark, bronches and neeedles. The bolewood represents, at age 8, 69% of the above-ground biomass and 76% at the18 years old stand. The nutrient concentration in the tree tissues shows the following order: needles > branches ≷ bark > bolewood. The needles shows, in average, nutrient concentration 7,5 times higher than the nutrient concentration in the bolewood. The quantity of nutrients retained in the pine biomass were 551,6 kg/ha in the 8 years old stand, 59% it located inthe bark and crown. At age 14, the nutrient content were 604,5 kg/ha, 52% located in the bark and crown. The nutrient content of the 18 years old stand were 669,7 kg/ha and the crown and bark retained 46% of it. The whole-tree harvest, in comparison with the conventional harvest (only the bolewood), increases the output of nutrients in 144% at age 8, 106% at age 14 and 85% at age 18. It seems to be not convenient to exploit the crown and bark, mainly for short rotation, because the increase yeld is accompanied by a strong increase in nutrients removal.
